The Road Less Traveled: Nina Machina Takes on PMBAR

Not every race follows a marked course. At the Pisgah Mountain Bike Adventure Race (PMBAR), riders must navigate their own route through the rugged Pisgah National Forest, finding hidden checkpoints and making smart decisions along the way.

When Nina Machina got the chance to team up with fellow racer Abigail Snyder, she jumped at the opportunity. What followed was hours of technical riding, navigation, and teamwork, culminating in a hard-earned win in the women's category.

I've always loved challenging myself with races that are a little outside the box, and PMBAR (Pisgah Mountain Bike Adventure Race) is a Brevard classic I'd never tackled before. It wasn't originally on my 2026 race calendar, but when enduro and marathon MTB racer Abigail Snyder posted that she needed a teammate, I jumped at the opportunity.A two-person adventure race through Pisgah National Forest, where checkpoints aren't revealed until race morning and you have to navigate your own route? I was sold! With 8–13 hours of riding expected, preparation is key.

My USWE MTB hydration pack made carrying all the required emergency gear and up to 3 liters of water easy, even while navigating some of the most rugged and technical trails Pisgah has to offer.

After hours of navigating, technical riding, and plenty of adventure, Abigail and I managed to reach all five checkpoints, something relatively uncommon for women's teams. That fifth checkpoint earned us a valuable two-hour time bonus and ultimately secured us the win in a tight battle!

PMBAR reminded me why I love unconventional endurance challenges so much. It's not always about being the strongest rider, but about teamwork, making smart decisions, being prepared for the unexpected, and being willing to take the road less traveled.
